Failaka Island

Twenty kilometres off Kuwait City, Failaka compresses four thousand years into a walkable shore: Bronze Age Dilmun settlements and temples mark the island's role on the Gulf's oldest trade routes, and over them the Greeks of Alexander's era planted a fortress town they called Ikaros, leaving temple stones, inscriptions and a garrison's worth of artefacts that made Failaka the Gulf's premier classical site. The modern layer is starker - the island's village was abandoned in 1990 and stands as a weathering ghost town - while day-trippers ferry over for the excavations, the beaches and a heritage village with camels and old-Kuwait recreations.

When to go

November to March for cool, clear days - the island is shadeless and summer is prohibitive. Ferries run to schedule but check the day's sailings; winter weekends bring picnicking families.

Honest expectations

The archaeology is significant rather than spectacular - low walls and foundations that need context to sing; the site interpretation is modest. The abandoned village, marked by its history, should be treated respectfully rather than as a photo playground. Services on the island are limited - carry water and sun cover.
