Quinkan Rock Art, Laura, Australia - what to expect

The sandstone escarpments around Laura, in the southeast of Cape York, hold hundreds of painted shelters. The best known figures are the Quinkan spirits, tall thin forms and squat heavy ones, painted alongside animals, weapons and human figures in ochre and white. Some galleries are open to visitors on a short marked walk at Split Rock, where a steep path climbs to overhangs above the valley; others are reached only with Traditional Owner guides based in Laura, who explain what can and cannot be discussed. This is living cultural heritage rather than an exhibit, and the request not to touch the surfaces or photograph certain panels is straightforward and worth honouring.

When to go

The dry season, roughly May to September, is the only sensible window; wet season heat, storms and road closures rule out the rest of the year. Mornings are cooler for the climb, and early light reaches further into the shelters. Guided tours have to be arranged in advance in Laura and do not run every day, so plan around them.

Honest expectations

The walk up to Split Rock is short but steep, rocky and fully exposed, and it is hard work in heat. The unguided galleries are limited, and without a guide the context is thin. Laura is a very small settlement with basic services and fuel, and the drive from Cairns is long, partly on unsealed road. Some panels are faded and take patience to read.
