Al Shaheed Park

Where Kuwait City's old wall once ran, the capital has grown its showpiece park: Al Shaheed's terraces and lawns thread between skyline views, with botanical plantings that favour the desert's own flora, a lake drawing herons among the joggers, and sculpted memorial gardens honouring the country's fallen. Two small museums - the Habitat, on Kuwait's ecosystems and bird migrations, and the Thekra, on national memory - anchor the park's cultural claim, and an amphitheatre programmes concerts through the cool months. Evenings are the park's hour, when the towers light up and half the city seems to be walking the loop.

When to go

November to March, and always toward evening - summer daytime is for the museums' air conditioning only. Winter weekends fill the lawns with families; concert nights add the amphitheatre's draw.

Honest expectations

It is a superbly kept urban park rather than a botanical destination in the scholarly sense - plant labelling is light. Shade remains young; middays even in winter want a hat. The museums are compact - allow an hour, not an afternoon.
