The Jahra Pool reserve sits at the head of Kuwait Bay where treated water and natural seepage have created reed beds, open pools and mudflat in a country with almost no fresh water, and the result is the best birding site in Kuwait: flamingos, herons, crakes, warblers and very large numbers of migrating waders on the flyway between Eurasia and Africa. Access is by permit and arrangement. Over two hundred and fifty bird species have been recorded on the site, which for an area this small is remarkable.

When to go
November to March is the peak for migrants and the comfortable season. Spring and autumn passage are heaviest. Summer heat is extreme.
Honest expectations
Access requires a permit arranged in advance with the reserve. The water depends on treated supply and levels vary. Summer makes visiting impractical.
