Thimlich Ohinga

Thimlich Ohinga is the best preserved of a set of dry-stone enclosures built across the Lake Victoria basin from around the sixteenth century, walls of interlocking stone laid without mortar, standing between one and four metres high and enclosing spaces where communities lived with their livestock. The construction is precise: stones are graded through the thickness of the wall and locked so that the structures have stood for centuries without maintenance. Inside the main enclosure are smaller pens, house platforms and gateways narrow enough to control who and what passed. The site was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2018, recognising it as an outstanding example of the massive dry-stone building tradition of the region. It sits in quiet farmland, reached by rough roads, and guides from the site museum explain the layout and the building method.

When to go

Dry seasons for the access roads, which are rough and become difficult in the rains. Mornings for light and cooler walking. The site is rarely busy, so a guided visit is usually private.

Honest expectations

Getting there is the hard part: the last stretch is unsurfaced and slow. The site is modest in scale, and its interest is in the construction and history rather than in spectacle. Interpretation is limited to what the guides provide. Facilities are minimal.
