Actun Tunichil Muknal

Actun Tunichil Muknal - the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre - is the most extraordinary archaeological experience in Central America: a river cave the Maya used as a portal to Xibalba, the underworld, where drought-era ceremonies escalated to human sacrifice. Getting in means jungle trails, three river crossings and swimming into the cave mouth, then wading and climbing deep into chambers where ceramics, hearths and calcified skeletons lie untouched where they were left - including the Crystal Maiden, a sparkling calcite-covered skeleton that gave the cave its fame. Nothing is roped off; you walk in socks among artefacts, which is why access is strictly guided and capped.

When to go

The drier months from December to May keep water levels manageable; the cave closes after heavy rain when the river rises. Book ahead - daily entry is capped and San Ignacio operators fill fast in high season.

Good to know

Cameras are banned outright after a tourist dropped one on a skull - phones too, so there are no photos and that is final. The trip is physical: swimming, wading chest-deep, scrambling and squeezing in helmet and headlamp for hours. Not for claustrophobes, non-swimmers or young children. Wear secure water shoes and expect to be soaked all day. It is worth every bit of it.
