Big Rock Falls drops around fifty metres on Privassion Creek into a deep pool ringed by granite slabs, and it is the best swimming spot in the Mountain Pine Ridge: the pool is deep enough to jump into from the rocks and the water is cold. Getting down is a steep flight of steps and a scramble. The surroundings are pine on the plateau above and broadleaf forest in the creek valley itself.
What you actually see
- The fall - around fifty metres dropping into a deep granite pool.
- The pool - deep enough to swim and jump into from the rock slabs.
- The granite - smooth rock shelves around the water.
- The valley forest - broadleaf forest along the creek below the pine plateau.
When to go
December to April is the dry season and the safest for swimming and the roads. After heavy rain the creek rises fast and the pool becomes dangerous. Mornings are quietest.
Honest expectations
The steps and scramble down are steep and slippery and the climb back is hard work. Water levels rise very fast after rain upstream. There are no lifeguards and jumping from the rocks has caused injuries.
Nearby
The Rio On Pools are nearby, and Thousand Foot Falls is north.
