Cahal Pech occupies a hilltop above the confluence of the Macal and Mopan rivers, and excavation has pushed its earliest occupation back to around 1200 BC, which makes it one of the oldest known settlements in the Maya lowlands. It was a royal residence rather than a great ceremonial centre, and the layout reflects that: thirty-four structures around seven small plazas, tightly packed, with narrow passages and stairways between them so that walking through it feels like moving through a compound rather than across a ceremonial space. The name means place of the ticks, given by archaeologists in the 1950s when the hill was cattle pasture.

What you actually see

  • The compact layout - seven small plazas and narrow connecting passages.
  • The early occupation - among the oldest in the Maya lowlands.
  • The site museum - the finds and the excavation history.
  • The hilltop position - above the river confluence and the town.

When to go

December to April is the dry season. Mornings and late afternoons are cooler for the walk up. It takes about ninety minutes and is often quiet, since most visitors go to the larger sites instead.

Honest expectations

It is small and the structures are modest compared with Xunantunich or Caracol; the interest is in the age and the intimacy rather than the scale. The walk up from town is steep in the heat. Interpretation on site is limited. The museum is small.

Nearby

San Ignacio is directly below; Xunantunich is twenty minutes west.
