Takawiri Island

Takawiri is small, a couple of square kilometres, and its reputation rests on a stretch of genuinely white sand backed by palms on the western shore, which looks more like a coastal beach than anything expected on a freshwater lake in western Kenya. The sand comes from weathered rock rather than coral, and the water is warm and shallow, though bilharzia is present in Lake Victoria and swimming carries that risk everywhere on the lake. A small resort sits behind the beach and a fishing community lives on the island, and there is little else: a walk around the shoreline takes an hour or two, and the interior is scrub and smallholdings. Most visitors come as a day trip from Mbita or Rusinga, or stay a night for the quiet and the sunsets over the water.

When to go

Dry seasons for calmer crossings and clearer skies. Mornings for the boat trip out. Weekends bring visitors from Kisumu and Homa Bay; weekdays are usually empty.

Honest expectations

Bilharzia is a real risk in Lake Victoria and swimming is a personal judgement; treatment is straightforward but exposure is common. Boats are small and the crossing rough in wind. Facilities amount to one modest resort and basic village services. Litter on the beach varies with recent use.
