St Matthew's Glass Church

St Matthew's at Millbrook is an ordinary church of 1840 that was transformed in 1934 when Florence Boot, whose husband founded the chemist chain, commissioned René Lalique to refit the interior as a memorial to him. Lalique made the font, the screens, the altar cross, four glass angels and the great east window in his moulded opalescent glass. It is generally considered the most complete Lalique interior anywhere. Lalique had never fitted out a complete church before and did not do so again, which is part of why the interior is so unlike anything else of its kind.

When to go

Year round; the church keeps daytime hours. Services restrict visiting. Bright days show the glass best.

Practical notes

It is a working parish church and can be closed for services or events. The glass is best in good light and dull in flat weather. An hour covers it.
