Elizabeth Castle

Elizabeth Castle commands St Helier's bay from its tidal islet - begun in the 1590s (Sir Walter Raleigh, as governor, named it for his queen), sheltering Charles II in exile, and layering defensive centuries from Tudor bastions to the harbour approaches' later works. The approach is half the visit: at low water a causeway walk crosses the sands, at high water the amphibious ferry splashes out from the esplanade, and the castle's wards reward with parade-ground history, noon-gun ceremony in season, ramparts over the bay and the hermitage rock of Saint Helier himself - the island's name-saint - joined at the lowest tides.

April to October for full opening and ferry service; tide tables choose your approach adventure. The hermitage add-on needs the lowest tides' timing.

Things to know

Crossing timings rule everything - mind the returning tide as the wardens instruct; the islet is exposed and the wards cobbled. The Heritage ticket bundles well with the island's other sites.
