Falmouth

Founded in 1769 and named for the Cornish port, Falmouth grew rich fast as sugar flowed out of Trelawny, and for a few decades it was among the busiest harbours in the Caribbean - with piped water in its streets before New York had any. The boom ended, the town stopped growing, and the accidental result is one of the best-preserved collections of Georgian architecture in the Americas: merchant houses with wooden verandahs and cut-stone bases, the courthouse, churches and warehouses, all on a walkable grid. Restoration has been slow and uneven, which gives the place a weathered honesty rather than a museum polish.

When to go

The dry winter months suit walking the streets best. Cruise ships dock here regularly and the town centre swings between quiet and crowded depending on the day's calls - check the port schedule if you prefer one or the other. Wednesday's big market day is the liveliest local experience.

Honest expectations

Falmouth is a genuine working town, not a restored heritage set: many historic buildings are still awaiting repair, and the area near the cruise pier is far tidier than the rest. Hustling for tours and taxis is common on ship days. A guided heritage walk is worth it here - the architecture is much more interesting once someone explains what you are looking at.
