Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall was built in the 1770s on a rise above the coast, a Georgian house of cut stone with a double staircase and a view over what were once several thousand acres of cane worked by hundreds of enslaved people. It fell into ruin after emancipation and was restored in the 1960s with period furnishings. Its fame rests on Annie Palmer, the White Witch, said to have murdered three husbands and practised obeah before being killed herself, a story that draws on a real Annie Palmer but was largely constructed in a 1929 novel and has been embellished ever since. The house runs both daytime tours and candlelit night tours that lean into it.

History

Henry Fanning bought the land, 290 acres of cane called True Friendship, for £3,000 in 1742 and married Rosa Kelly in 1746, but he died soon after; her next husband, George Ash, carried out Fanning's plan, and the house cost £30,000 and was richly finished in carved mahogany and stone. In 1820 John Rose Palmer, who had inherited the estate, married Anne Mary Patterson from Lucea (Wikipedia, Rose Hall, Montego Bay).

When to go

December to April is the dry high season. Day tours run through the day; the candlelit tours are in the evening and book out, particularly around Halloween. Cruise days bring groups.

Before you go

The ghost story is the main product and it is largely fiction, which is worth knowing; some visitors find the whole framing uncomfortable given that the house's real history is the enslavement of hundreds of people, a subject the tour handles lightly. Entry is expensive for what it is. The gift shop and photograph sell are persistent.
