Seaford Town

After emancipation, planters worried about labour brought in indentured Europeans, and in 1835 around twelve hundred Germans were settled on land in the Westmoreland hills given by Lord Seaford. Conditions were hard and many died or left, but a community survived and its descendants are still here, some with the surnames and features that mark the origin. A small museum beside the Catholic church covers the settlement, the ships and the families.

History

Commonly known as German Town, the settlement was founded by Charles Ellis, 1st Baron Seaford, and settled by German labourers around 1835 (Wikipedia, Seaford Town, Jamaica).

When to go

December to April is the drier season. The museum keeps limited hours and is best arranged in advance. The hill roads are difficult after heavy rain.

Good to know

The museum is small and often closed; calling ahead avoids a wasted trip. Hurricane Melissa came ashore in Westmoreland on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 storm and all of Seaford Town's public buildings were reported destroyed, so ask whether the museum has reopened at all before making the drive. The village has no other facilities for visitors. Photographing residents is not appreciated and the community has had problems with visitors treating it as a curiosity.
