YS Falls

YS Falls tumbles through the grounds of a working cattle and horse farm in Jamaica's quiet south-west, and the setting is half the pleasure: visitors ride a tractor-drawn jitney from the car park across pasture and under giant guango trees before the falls appear, seven cascades stacked in green shade with pools deep enough to swim and a rope swing over the biggest. It is smaller and far less trafficked than Dunn's River on the north coast, with lifeguards, changing rooms and a lawn for lying about, which makes it the family-friendly choice that still feels like countryside rather than an attraction.

When to go

Water flows year round, strongest after the rains of May and October and gentlest in the dry winter months. Weekday mornings are the calmest; cruise-ship excursion days from Montego Bay fill the pools by midday. Closed Mondays and some public holidays - check before driving out.

Honest expectations

Rocks are slippery and the current below the main fall is stronger than it looks - lifeguards are present and their instructions are not decorative. The entry fee covers the jitney and lifeguards; extras like ziplines and tubing cost more. It is a long drive from the north-coast resorts, so most visitors come as part of a south-coast day combining the Black River safari and Pelican Bar.
