Lodhi Gardens

The tombs of the Sayyid and Lodi sultans stand in what was a village until the 1930s, when the area was landscaped as a park; the village was moved and the monuments left in gardens. Muhammad Shah's tomb, an octagon with a veranda and small domes, is the earliest; Sikandar Lodi's is similar and enclosed by a wall; the Bara Gumbad and Shish Gumbad are large square structures with a mosque, the latter keeping traces of the blue tiles that gave it its name. The park is Delhi's principal morning ground for walkers, runners, yoga groups and birdwatchers.

What you actually see

• The sultans' tombs - octagonal and square fifteenth-century mausolea.
• Bara Gumbad and its mosque - the domed pair with fine plaster ceilings.
• Shish Gumbad - remains of blue tilework on the facade.
• The morning use - walkers, yoga, birdwatchers and dogs across the lawns.

When to go

October to March; the park is busiest and best at dawn and at dusk. Spring flowering and the winter bird list are both good. Delhi summers make the middle of the day unpleasant.

Honest expectations

The tombs are unlit and unlabelled in places, and interiors are simple. The park is genuinely public and crowded at peak hours. Couples and photographers occupy many of the quieter corners.
