Szarsomlyo Hill

Szarsomlyo rises abruptly out of flat farmland at the southern end of the Villany hills, a narrow limestone ridge stripped almost bare on its south face. The rock there is weathered into sharp fluting and blades, a karren field that is uncomfortable to cross and slow to walk on. That harsh south slope is a strict reserve, protected for plants that survive nowhere else in Hungary in the same way, including a small colchicum that flowers in late winter when the rest of the country is bare. The north side is wooded and gentler. On the lower flank, a disused quarry has been used since the 1960s as an open-air sculpture site, with carved stone pieces left in place among the workings.

What you actually see

• The karren field - sharply fluted and bladed limestone on the exposed south face.
• Late winter flowering - the rare colchicum that blooms here in February, unusually early for Hungary.
• The sculpture quarry - stone works left in a disused quarry on the lower slope at Nagyharsany.
• The ridge view - the Villany vineyards, the Drava plain and the hills across the border to the south.

When to go

March to May is the best window: the rock warms early here and the flora is at its most interesting. October gives clear air and harvest activity in the vineyards below. Avoid July and August, when the south face becomes an oven with no shade and no water. Parts of the reserve are closed year-round and others seasonally, so read the signs at the trailhead.

Honest expectations

The strictly protected south face is closed, so you follow a marked route rather than wander. The rock is genuinely sharp and hard on hands and boots, and the ground is loose in places. There is no water, no shade and no shelter on the ridge. In summer heat this becomes unpleasant fast. The quarry below is scarred industrial ground, which some visitors find bleak rather than interesting.
