Orfu Lakes

Orfu is a set of four small lakes made by damming streams in the wooded Mecsek hills north of Pecs, and it functions as the summer water for a city that has none: swimming beaches, rowing and pedal boats, campsites and a cycle path running between the lakes and on toward Abaliget. The largest, the Pecsi-to, takes the swimming; the smallest are kept quiet for fishing and birds. A mill museum in the village keeps a working water mill and a collection of milling equipment, and the surrounding hills carry marked walking trails through beech forest. It is an ordinary domestic resort rather than a sight, and it is at its best out of the July peak.

When to go

May to September for swimming and boats. A day. July and August weekends are crowded with Pecs families. Spring and autumn are better for walking and cycling.

Honest expectations

These are small artificial lakes, not scenery on a grand scale. Peak summer is crowded and the beaches are basic. Water quality varies with the season. Out of summer most of the facilities close.
