The Braslav Lakes

The last glaciation strung the Braslav district with some three hundred lakes - a blue necklace threaded through pine and birch hills that the national park keeps as the country's summer sanctuary: Drivyaty's broad sail-water at Braslav town, deep Volso and South Voloso ranked among the clearest, island-scattered Strusto for kayak days, and viewpoint hills (Mayak the classic) reading the archipelago-in-land from above. The culture is boats, berries and banya: rental rowboats and fishing at dawn, mushroom baskets in the woods, campfire evenings at reserved lakeside pitches.

When to go

June to September for swimming-warm water and long light; September adds mushrooms and empty pitches. Book camp spots and boats ahead in July-August.

The lakes reward self-sufficiency - rentals, groceries and arrangements centre on Braslav town; mosquitoes hold their June parliament at dusk.
