Lake Salda

Salda fills a tectonic basin in the hills west of Burdur and is unusually deep, close to two hundred metres, which gives the open water a hard blue-green colour that holds even under cloud. The shoreline is what made it famous: white sediment rich in magnesium, laid down with the help of microbial communities, so the beaches read as crushed chalk against the water. Similar mineral chemistry in a crater on Mars led researchers to use Salda as a comparison site. Public access to the whitest shores was restricted after years of visitor damage, and swimming is now channelled into a managed beach with parking, showers and a boardwalk. The rest of the shore is protected.

When to go

Swimming season is roughly June to September, when the surface warms enough to be pleasant; the lake is deep and cold otherwise. Weekends bring heavy domestic traffic and full car parks by late morning. Early and late in the day the light on the white shore is better and the crowd noticeably thinner.

Honest expectations

Expect a managed site rather than open nature: fences, boardwalk, restricted beaches and a car park. Taking the white mud away is not allowed and the rule is enforced. The most photographed white bays are precisely the ones now closed to entry. Facilities are functional, and the summer crowd is large and loud.
