Zselic Starry Sky Park

Zselic is a block of hilly, heavily wooded country south of Kaposvar, deeply cut by small valleys and covered in beech and oak with old pasture-woodland remnants. What made it internationally known is not the forest but what is above it: with no large towns nearby and very little outdoor lighting, this is among the darkest skies in Hungary, and it was designated an international dark sky park. A visitor centre at Zselickisfalud runs the observing side, with telescopes, a planetarium projection and evening sessions timed to moonless nights. By day the same area is quiet walking country, with marked trails, scattered hamlets and old orchards, and almost no traffic on the forest roads.

When to go

For stars, aim for autumn to early spring, when nights are long and skies clearer, and check the moon phase: a full moon cancels the point of coming. Programmes are scheduled and need booking. For walking, May to October is comfortable. Nights are cold here even in summer once the sun goes, so bring more layers than the daytime temperature suggests.

Honest expectations

Everything depends on cloud, and Hungarian winters deliver plenty of it, so a booked night can be a total loss with no view at all. Programmes run mainly in Hungarian, with English depending on staff availability. There is no public transport worth using, and the roads are unlit and narrow after dark. Waiting outside for hours in winter is colder than most visitors plan for.
