The railway from Capolago has been grinding up the western flank of Monte Generoso since 1890 and still takes around forty minutes to reach the top station, a short walk below a summit ridge at one thousand seven hundred and four metres. The building at the top, designed by Mario Botta and opened in 2017, is a ring of stone piers that its architect called a flower of stone, and it replaced a plain concrete block from the middle of the last century. From the ridge the ground falls to Lake Lugano on one side and to the plain running south on the other. Lower down, a cave found in the 1980s held the bones of cave bears and can be reached on foot.

What you actually see

  • The summit ridge - Lake Lugano on one side, the plain running south on the other.
  • Fiore di pietra - Mario Botta's stone summit building, opened in 2017.
  • The rack railway - about forty minutes of climbing from the lake shore at Capolago.
  • The bear cave - a cave below the ridge where cave bear bones were found.

When to go

The railway runs from spring to early November and closes for winter. Clear days after rain give the widest view, since summer haze over the plain flattens it. Mornings are cooler for walking the ridge, and the last train down is early enough to catch people out. Spring brings narcissus across the upper slopes.

Honest expectations

Haze is common and can reduce a famous panorama to a white blur, so pick the day rather than the date. The railway is expensive for its length and does not run through winter. The summit building is a restaurant with viewing terraces rather than a museum, and beyond walking the ridge there is little to do up there.

Lugano and its lake below, with Mendrisio and Monte San Giorgio to the south.
