Lugano
An Italian-speaking lake city of arcaded piazzas and palms, with a Renaissance fresco cycle in a lakeside church.

Lugano is the largest city of Ticino and reads as Italian rather than Swiss: arcaded lanes, a lakeside promenade of palms and magnolias, piazzas with cafe tables, and a climate mild enough that camellias flower in February. Its most important single work is easy to miss - the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli by the lake holds a Passion and Crucifixion fresco by Bernardino Luini of 1529, a vast and crowded wall painting counted among the finest Renaissance works in Switzerland. The LAC arts centre added a modern gallery and concert hall in 2015. Monte Bre and San Salvatore rise on either side, and boats run to Gandria and Morcote.

It is a banking city as much as a resort, and parts are modern and unremarkable. Summer heat and humidity are heavy. Prices are high. The lake is shared with Italy and boat schedules reflect the border.
