Monte Verde rises to around seven hundred and fifty metres in the middle of São Vicente, and it is called the green mountain because it is: the trade winds drop enough moisture on its top for vegetation to hold on where the rest of the island is bare rock and dust. A road climbs to the summit, where communications masts stand, and the view runs over Mindelo, the bay, and across to Santo Antão on a clear day.

When to go
November to June is the dry season. Cloud sits on the summit frequently. Harmattan haze in winter can close the long views.
Honest expectations
Communications masts occupy the summit and clutter the view. Cloud closes the top a great deal of the time. The road is steep and rough in places.
