Calhau is a small settlement on the eastern shore of São Vicente, below the cone of Monte Verde on one side and the extinct crater of Viana on the other, with black sand and rock beaches running along the coast. It is a fishing village that also serves as a weekend place for Mindelo, with a few restaurants known for grilled fish. The coast here is fully exposed and the wind blows constantly.
