Lake Tisza

Lake Tisza was made by damming the Tisza at Kiskore, and the water spread through floodplain forest rather than an open basin. What resulted is closer to a maze than a lake: channels between willow stands, dead-end backwaters, islands and shallow bays, with only part of it clear open water for sailing and swimming. Much of the northern section is a protected bird reserve where access is by guided boat or marked water trail. The reserve holds herons, terns, egrets, black storks and one of the country's more reliable populations of white-tailed eagles. Around the shore, Tiszafured and Abadszalok run the standard lake economy of beaches, kayak hire and cycling, while Poroszlo has the visitor centre that explains the system.

What you actually see

• Lake Tisza Ecocentre at Poroszlo - a large freshwater aquarium sequence following the river from spring to delta, plus a boardwalk.
• The bird reserve backwaters - guided boat routes through flooded willow forest and reed channels.
• Kayak and canoe water trails - marked routes through side channels away from motor traffic.
• The shoreline cycle route - a flat circuit linking Tiszafured, Poroszlo and Abadszalok.

When to go

May and June bring nesting activity and green flooded forest; September is calmer and clearer. July and August are the swimming and watersports peak, which also means jet skis on the open sections. Bird boat trips run to a schedule and sell out on summer weekends. Early morning gives the best chance of eagles and the flattest water for paddling.

Honest expectations

Mosquitoes here are serious from May to September and can end an evening outdoors. Water clarity is poor, and the swimming areas are silty underfoot. The reserve is closed to independent boats in its core, so you pay for a guided trip or see little. Wildlife is distant and often just a silhouette. Sections of the shore are lined with weekend plots rather than natural bank.
