Egerszalok Salt Hill

At Egerszalok, hot water reaching the surface from deep underground carries dissolved calcium carbonate and drops it as it cools and degasses. Over decades this has built a pale, rounded terrace down the hillside, ridged and pooled in the way travertine forms everywhere it appears. Hungarians call it the salt hill, though the deposit is limestone rather than salt. The formation is protected and fenced, so visitors look at it from the paths and terraces around rather than walking on it. Beside it stands a large modern thermal complex that uses the same water in a stack of outdoor and indoor pools, which is what most people actually come for. The village behind is small and wine-growing.

When to go

Winter is the most photogenic time, with steam rising off the water against snow and the white deposit at its cleanest. Summer brings the biggest bath crowds and long waits for lockers. Early morning and late afternoon avoid both. The formation itself is visible year-round in daylight; the baths keep their own hours and are busiest at weekends and on public holidays.

Things to know

The terrace is much smaller than photographs suggest, and comparisons with famous travertine sites elsewhere set people up for disappointment. You cannot walk on it or bathe on it: the surface is fenced off. What dominates the site is a modern bath complex and its car park rather than a natural landscape. Weekend crowds are heavy, and off-season the deposit can look grey rather than white.
