EntryFree; advance registration required

Tsz Shan opened in 2015 on a hillside above Tolo Harbour, privately funded and built in a restrained Tang-inspired timber style over a large walled compound, and it is dominated by a standing bronze figure of Guan Yin seventy-six metres high, white-coated and visible from far across the water. The approach runs through a courtyard, a hall of a hundred thousand small buddhas and a landscaped path to the statue's plinth, where a hall beneath holds a museum of Buddhist art with pieces from Gandhara onward. Numbers are capped and visits must be registered in advance online, which keeps the site quiet in a way that no other major temple here manages.

What you actually see

  • The 76-metre bronze Guan Yin - the standing figure above Tolo Harbour.
  • Tang-style timber halls - the restrained modern compound.
  • The Buddhist art museum - collections in the hall beneath the statue.
  • Capped visitor numbers - the quiet that registration produces.

When to go

October to April. Half a day. Registration opens in advance online and slots go quickly; there is no admission without it. Closed on some days for religious activity.

Honest expectations

You cannot turn up without a booking, and this catches many visitors out. Photography is restricted in parts of the compound. Getting there needs a taxi or the shuttle. Everything is modern; there is no historic fabric.

Nearby

Tai Po is north-east; Plover Cove lies beyond it.
