Taulabe Caves

The Taulabé caves open directly off the main highway, which makes them the easiest cave visit in Honduras and a standard stop on the drive between the capital and San Pedro Sula. The lit section runs a few hundred metres in past stalactites, columns and flowstone, with a walkway and handrails. Beyond it the system continues for a considerable distance and has never been fully surveyed; the guides will take you a little further with torches if you want the unlit version.

What you actually see

• The lit gallery - a few hundred metres of walkway past columns and flowstone.
• The formations - stalactites, stalagmites and curtains through the show section.
• The unlit continuation - passages beyond the lights, entered with a guide and torch.
• The bats - resident colonies in the upper chambers.

When to go

Year round; the cave is unaffected by weather and the highway location makes it easy. Weekends bring more traffic. Guides run continuous tours through the day.

Honest expectations

The lit section is short and the visit takes about forty minutes. Lighting is dated and the walkway is wet and slippery in places. It is a roadside stop rather than a destination.

Lake Yojoa is north on the same highway, and Comayagua is south.
