Cerro Azul Meámbar rises east of Lake Yojoa and holds the mix of pine, broadleaf and cloud forest that the ridge altitude allows, with streams cutting down through it to the lake. What makes it unusual in Honduras is the infrastructure: the PANACAM centre on the western side has maintained trails, signage, a lodge and a hummingbird garden, all run by a foundation rather than left to chance. The trails lead to viewpoints over the lake and to a series of waterfalls in the forest.

What you actually see

  • The marked trails - a maintained network of loops through pine and cloud forest.
  • The waterfalls - several falls on the streams cutting down towards the lake.
  • The lake viewpoints - Yojoa spread out below from the western ridge.
  • The hummingbird garden - feeders at the centre pulling in a good list of species.

When to go

November to April is the drier season and the best for walking. Rain is possible in any month at this altitude. Early morning is best for birds and for the view before cloud builds.

Honest expectations

The access road climbs eleven kilometres of rough surface and is hard work without a proper vehicle. The lodge is comfortable but books out at weekends and holidays. Trails are steep in sections despite being well made.

Nearby

Lake Yojoa is at the foot of the ridge, and Pulhapanzak falls are on the northern side of the lake.
