Fermain Bay

Fermain rewards the walked approach: the cliff path south from St Peter Port winds green headlands for forty minutes before dropping to the bay's horseshoe - pebbles shelving to low-tide sand, water in the archipelago's clear green, a Napoleonic loophole tower on the northern arm and the beach cafe whose crab sandwiches carry island-wide reputation. Cars stop far above by design, keeping the cove foot-traffic calm; swimmers work the moored-raft circuit in season, and the return climb's views over the Little Russel to Herm justify the second scone entirely.

When to go

Before you go

Access is legs-only in practice - the lane descent is steep and parking scarce above; the pebbles ask swim shoes of tender feet. Fine Sundays fill the horseshoe by noon.
