Fort Santa Águeda

Fort Santa Águeda, also called Fort Apugan, stands on the hill above Hagåtña, built by the Spanish in 1800 to cover the approaches to the capital and the only one of the island's Spanish forts still standing in the Hagåtña area. Replica cannon sit on the platform. From the walls the capital, the bay and the reef line are laid out, which is the reason most people come up. The Spanish built a chain of small forts around the island in the same period, of which this is the best preserved. The name Apugan comes from the hill it stands on.

When to go

December to June is the drier season. Late afternoon light over the bay is best. Typhoon season runs July to November.

Honest expectations

The fort is small and largely reconstructed, with replica guns. Interpretation is minimal. An hour is generous.
