Perdika

Perdika sits above a small bay on the southwestern corner of Aegina, and it is the island's eating village: a pedestrian quay lined with fish tavernas whose tables sit above the water, looking across a narrow channel to the wooded islet of Moni. Fishing boats still unload here, and the catch on the menu is genuinely local more often than not. Small boats cross to Moni in ten minutes, an uninhabited nature reserve with pine woods, clear water and a resident population of peacocks and deer left there decades ago; there is a seasonal canteen and no other development. Behind Perdika the hillside holds houses and a couple of small hotels, and sunsets over the Peloponnese are the evening event.

What to look for

• The taverna quay - a pedestrian waterfront of fish restaurants.
• Moni islet - a pine-covered reserve with peacocks, deer and clear water.
• The fishing harbour - working boats unloading at the quay.
• The sunset - the Peloponnese across the water at dusk.

When to go

May, June and September for warm sea and open tavernas without August crowds; the boats to Moni run from late spring to early autumn. Winter keeps a couple of places open for locals.

Things to know

The village is small, essentially one street and a quay, seen in an hour. Prices on the waterfront are higher than inland Aegina. Moni has no facilities beyond a seasonal canteen and no shade on the shore.

Aegina Town lies north; the Temple of Aphaia is on the other side of the island.
