Edessa sits on the lip of a cliff above the Macedonian plain, and its river does the dramatic thing: the waters that thread the town in channels gather at the edge and leap off it, with the 70-metre Karanos - the biggest waterfall in Greece - as the headline plunge. The falls are believed to have taken their present course around the 14th century, when a geological upheaval, most likely an earthquake, redirected the flow; before that the water dispersed more quietly down the slope. Today a leafy park lines the rim, viewing platforms hang over the drop, and a path slips behind the Karanos curtain itself, where the world turns to roar and spray. Beside it, the double cascade nicknamed Lamda splits photogenically over the rocks, and the old hemp-factory quarter below the cliff recalls the era when all this falling water ran the town's mills.
What you actually see
- Karanos - the 70-metre main plunge off the town's cliff edge.
- The behind-the-falls path - the walkway through spray and thunder.
- The Lamda cascade - the double waterfall splitting over the rocks.
- The waterside park - channels, plane trees and platforms along the rim.
When to go
Spring snowmelt from March to June gives the falls their full voice; late summer thins the flow noticeably. The plain below steams in July heat, while the spray keeps the park itself pleasantly cool.
Honest expectations
The path behind the curtain is wet, loud and slippery - grippy shoes are essential and cameras get misted. The falls and park fill an unhurried half day at most, so pair Edessa with the Pozar thermal springs or Naoussa's wine country to round out the trip.
Nearby
Pozar's hot springs, Naoussa's vineyards and Lake Vegoritida over the hills.
