Nymfaio

Nymfaio stands at about 1,350 metres on the slopes of Mount Verno, surrounded by beech forest, and it is one of the most carefully preserved villages in Greece: grey stone houses with slate roofs, cobbled lanes, no visible modern building, protected by strict rules and largely restored with money from Vlach families who emigrated and prospered abroad, particularly in silverwork. On the edge of the village the Arcturos sanctuary cares for brown bears that cannot be returned to the wild, mostly former dancing bears and orphans, in large forested enclosures; a separate facility houses wolves. Nymfaio's altitude means real winters with snow, and the beech woods around it turn gold in October. The village has a handful of guesthouses in restored mansions and a museum of the silversmith's craft.

When to go

May to October for walking and the sanctuary; October for beech colour; winter weekends for snow, when the village is popular and beds are scarce. Bears hibernate in the coldest months and may not be visible.

Honest expectations

The village is small and can be walked in half an hour, and its restored perfection can feel more like a resort than a working settlement. The bear sanctuary is a rescue centre, not a zoo: animals are in large enclosures and sightings are not guaranteed. Access roads can be snowbound.
