Daranak Falls

Daranak is the waterfall Manila goes to when it has a free Saturday. Fourteen or so metres of water spread across a rock face and drop into a broad jade-green pool at the foot of the Sierra Madre in Tanay, with a shallow shelf for children, deeper water toward the fall, and a picnic ground of cottages and grills under the trees. Its accessibility is the whole story - a couple of hours from the capital, no trek required, a short walk from the parking area - and that also explains the weekend crowds and the entrance-fee-and-cottage economy that comes with them. A steep path climbs to Batlag Falls above it, a smaller and usually quieter set of tiers with its own pools, and the combination makes the fuller half-day. The site has appeared in Filipino films for decades, which locals will tell you before you ask.

When to go

November to May for the safest water; weekday mornings for space. After heavy rain the pool browns and swimming is restricted.

Honest expectations

Weekends are genuinely crowded and loud. Fees stack - entrance, cottage, locker, parking. The rocks around the pool are slippery, and depth increases sharply near the fall.

Mount Daraitan and the Tinipak river, the Wawa dam gorge and Tanay's ridge viewpoints are all in the same district.
