Chania Old Town

Chania's old town wraps a curved Venetian harbour, and the layers show without much digging: the long arched arsenali where galleys were built and repaired, a lighthouse at the end of the mole rebuilt in the 1830s, the small domed mosque sitting directly on the quay, and behind them a maze of quarters that each kept their own character. Topanas climbs west toward the Firkas bastion and long stretches of Venetian wall. Splantzia, east, is the quieter half, with plane trees over a square and low houses. The Evraiki lane holds the restored synagogue. Between them, the cross-shaped covered market from 1913 still functions as the town's food hall.

What you actually see

• The Venetian arsenali - a row of tall arched shipyard bays opening onto the inner harbour.
• The harbour mosque and lighthouse - the domed building on the quay and the mole beyond it.
• Splantzia and Topanas - the two old quarters, one quiet and shaded, the other steep and walled.
• The covered market - a cross-shaped 1913 hall of butchers, cheese, herbs and raki.

When to go

May, June, September and October give warm sea, working light and a town that still functions. July and August are congested and hot enough that the old town empties in the afternoon and refills after dark. Early morning is the only time the harbour arc is photographable without crowds. Many places shut through parts of winter, when it also rains properly.

Honest expectations

The harbourfront strip is aggressively touted, priced for visitors and rarely the best food in town, which is a street or two inland. Lanes near the mosque are wall-to-wall souvenirs. Scooters use pedestrian alleys anyway. Parking is genuinely bad and the nearest legal spaces can be a long walk. Cruise days push the whole waterfront past comfort.

The Akrotiri monasteries are half an hour east and the road west leads toward Falassarna and the far coast.
