Samaria Gorge

Samaria is the classic Greek mountain day: a gorge slicing from the Omalos plateau in Crete's White Mountains sixteen kilometres down to the Libyan Sea, walked in one long, glorious, knee-testing descent. The path drops through pine and cypress forest, past the abandoned village of Samaria whose inhabitants left when the national park was created, alongside a stream that appears and vanishes, and finally between the Gates - the famous narrows where the walls close to about three metres apart and rise sheer for hundreds of metres. Kri-kri, the wild Cretan ibex, pick across the rocks, and the walk ends with a swim at Agia Roumeli, a village reachable only by foot or ferry.

When to go

The park opens roughly May to October, weather depending; May and June offer flowers and full springs, September gentler heat. In July and August start on the first bus - the descent is shadeless in stretches and the day genuinely hot. The gorge closes on days of rain or flood risk; check before travelling.

Honest expectations

The difficulty is honest: sixteen rocky downhill kilometres punish knees more than lungs, and trainers with worn soles cause most of the day's misery - real walking shoes and poles change everything. It is also popular; expect a procession in peak season rather than solitude, thinning as the day spreads out. The logistics are part of the deal - bus in, ferry out, and the schedule rules. Those wanting the Gates without the marathon can walk up from Agia Roumeli a short way instead.
