Amedzofe

Amedzofe sits at around 700 metres in the Avatime hills, which makes it one of the highest inhabited places in Ghana and noticeably cooler than the plains below. It was a German Bremen mission station in the nineteenth century, and the church and mission buildings remain. Above the village Mount Gemi carries a large iron cross put up by the missionaries, a short climb with a view over the Volta Region and, on clear days, toward the lake. A canopy walkway strung through the forest on the slope below the village opened in recent years, and a path descends to Ote falls in the valley. The community runs the sites and charges for each.

When to go

November to March in the dry season for clear views and firmer paths, though harmattan haze in December and January can blur the distance. The hills are cooler than the plains year round and can be chilly in the evening.

Honest expectations

Each activity is charged separately by the community, which adds up. The descent to the falls is steep and hard work coming back up. The canopy walkway is short compared with Kakum. Haze often removes the long view from Mount Gemi.
