Mount Afadja, also written Afadjato, rises to 885 metres on the border with Togo and is the highest point in Ghana, part of the Agumatsa range that runs along this frontier. The climb from Liati Wote is short but steep, taking about two hours up through farmland and then forest on a path that is more scramble than walk in places, and the summit is a small clearing with a marker and views over the Volta Region hills into Togo. Guides from the village community project are required and the fee supports local conservation. The path can be combined with Tagbo Falls, which lies in the same community area, making a full day from Liati Wote.

What you actually see

  • The summit marker - the high point at 885 metres with its cairn and sign.
  • The forest path - the steep climb through farm and woodland.
  • Volta Region views - the hills running into Togo from the top.
  • Liati Wote - the village and its community tourism project.

When to go

November to March in the dry season, when the path is firmest and views clearest; harmattan haze in December and January can obscure the view. Start early to avoid the heat. The rains make the climb slippery and difficult.

Honest expectations

The climb is steep and sustained despite its short length, and it is hot and humid. A community guide is compulsory and fees are charged per person. There is no water on the route. Haze often removes the view entirely.

Nearby

Tagbo Falls is in the same community; Wli waterfall lies north.
