Norðragøta was the seat of Tróndur í Gøtu, one of the central figures of the Faroese saga and the chieftain who resisted the coming of Christianity, which makes it one of the few Faroese villages with a documented medieval importance. Blásastova, a preserved farmhouse complex with turf roofs, is open as a museum. Since 2002 the village has hosted the G! Festival each July, held on the beach and in the surrounding fields.

What you actually see

  • Blasastova - a preserved turf-roofed farmhouse complex open as a museum.
  • The saga connection - the village of Trondur i Gotu, a central saga figure.
  • The G! Festival - the summer music festival held on the beach each July.
  • The old village core - the cluster of historic houses above the shore.

When to go

May to September for the museum. The G! Festival falls in July and fills the village completely. Winter is very quiet.

Honest expectations

The museum keeps short summer hours only. Festival week makes accommodation impossible to find anywhere nearby. Little is visible of the saga period beyond the setting.

Nearby

Fuglafjordur is north, and Torshavn is southwest.
