Elduvik

Elduvík stands where a stream reaches the sea on the eastern side of Funningsfjørður, and it is genuinely tiny: the population has been in the low double figures for years, and the village is split into two halves either side of the water, joined by a footbridge. Turf-roofed houses, a small church and a stone-walled infield make up the whole of it. A walking route climbs from the village towards Funningur.

Background

Elduvík, Eldevig in Danish, belongs to Runavík municipality and had 12 residents on 29 April 2025. The stream that divides it is the Stórá, and the island of Kalsoy can be seen from the village. The older houses stand west of the stream around the school and the church, while on the east side boathouses curve around the pier in a semicircle. Before the village had its own church, people walked the old path over the hillside to Oyndarfjørður for services. The churchyard came into use in 1926 and the church opened in 1951. Divers visit the gorge east of the village, where many crabs live on the seabed.

When to go

May to September is the season. The narrow road in is difficult in winter. Fog is frequent on this coast.

Before you go

There are no facilities of any kind: no shop, no cafe, no fuel. The road in is single track with passing places. Residents live here and the village is not an attraction.
