Dinara

Sinjal, the summit of Dinara, reaches 1,831 metres and is the highest point in Croatia, on a long bare limestone ridge running along the Bosnian border - and the massif gives its name to the entire Dinaric system that runs from Slovenia to Albania. The Croatian side is a steep grassy and rocky flank with no water and almost no shade, climbed on a marked path from Glavas near the Cetina source, taking roughly four hours up. The whole area became a nature park in 2021, the twelfth in Croatia. Wolves and bears use the range, and the high pastures are still grazed in summer.

June to September; snow and wind close it otherwise. A full day.

What to expect

There is no water on the mountain and no shade - everything must be carried. The bura can be violent on the ridge. Fog makes navigation genuinely hard on featureless karst. Some ground near the border was mined in the 1990s; stay on the marked route.
