Krka National Park protects the beautiful travertine waterfalls of the river Krka in Dalmatia, where the water tumbles over natural terraces of tufa into turquoise pools amid lush greenery. Its centrepiece, the great cascade of Skradinski Buk, is reached by boardwalks and boats past old watermills, and while gentler than Plitvice, it is more easily reached from the coast.

What you actually see

  • Skradinski Buk - the great tiered waterfall, the park's centrepiece.
  • The boardwalks - the paths winding past the cascades and pools.
  • The old watermills - the traditional mills along the river.
  • Visovac Island - the monastery on an islet, reached by boat.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn for full falls and mild weather; the falls run strongest in spring. Summer is hot and busy. It is easily combined with the coast at Sibenik or Split.

Honest expectations

Swimming, once allowed below the main falls, is now restricted, so check the current rules if that is the draw. It is popular and busy in summer, though larger and less pinched than Plitvice. It is easier to reach from the coast, making it a good day trip.

Nearby

Sibenik and its UNESCO cathedral are close; Split and the islands are within reach.
