Mount Healthy is a small national park on Tortola's north side built around the only intact sugar windmill left on the island, a stone tower of the eighteenth century that ground cane for a plantation whose other buildings, the boiling house, the animal mill and the hospital, survive only as foundations in the scrub around it. It stands as the clearest physical reminder on Tortola of the plantation economy and the enslaved labour that ran it.

What you actually see

  • The windmill tower - the only intact sugar mill surviving on Tortola.
  • The plantation foundations - the remains of the works around the mill.
  • The eighteenth-century date - the period the mill was built and worked.
  • The park setting - the small protected site on the north side.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. The site is open and free at all times. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Honest expectations

Only the windmill survives intact; the rest is foundations in scrub. There is minimal interpretation. The site is small and the visit brief.

Nearby

Brewers Bay is below, and Cane Garden Bay is east.
