UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
Konjic sits on the green Neretva under an old stone bridge, and since the late nineteenth century it has been known for a particular style of woodcarving, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Craftsmen work walnut into furniture, doors, panels and small objects covered in dense geometric and floral relief, cut entirely by hand with chisels, and the workshops are family businesses in which the patterns and the techniques pass from one generation to the next, with children starting young. The best-known workshops keep showrooms where you can watch carvers at the bench, see pieces at every stage from a plain plank to a finished cabinet, and buy anything from a small box to a full dining set. The town itself is worth an hour for the bridge and the riverfront.
What you actually see
- Carvers at the bench - hand chisel work on walnut in the family workshops.
- The showrooms - finished furniture, doors and panels in the traditional patterns.
- The stages of a piece - plain wood through to completed relief carving.
- Konjic's old bridge - the stone span over the green Neretva.
When to go
Year-round on working days, which is when the carvers are actually at the bench rather than the showroom simply being open. It is an easy stop on the road between Sarajevo and Mostar, so it fits into a travel day without a detour.
Honest expectations
Genuine hand-carved pieces are expensive and heavy, and shipping a cabinet home is a serious undertaking, so most visitors buy something small. Machine-carved imitations exist, so buy from a named workshop. The visit is short unless you are seriously interested in the craft, and Konjic otherwise is a modest town.
Nearby
Boračko lake is up the valley; Mostar is an hour south and Sarajevo an hour north.
