Little Bay

Little Bay on Barbados's northeastern coast is a cove cut into the coral rock with tide pools on the shelf, a blowhole that fires when the swell is right, and cliffs on both sides taking the Atlantic head-on. There is no sand to speak of and no development at all. The track down from the road is rough and the site is one of the emptiest parts of an otherwise busy island.

What you actually see

• The tide pools - basins in the coral shelf around the bay.
• The blowhole - the surge hole that fires with the right swell.
• The Atlantic cliffs - the rock taking the open ocean directly.
• The emptiness - a coast with nothing built along it.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. The blowhole works best with a big swell. The shelf is dangerous when the sea is up.

Honest expectations

The rock shelf is genuinely dangerous in swell and people have been swept off it. The track down is rough and needs care. There are no facilities.
