Magdalena Bay
Gray whales at arm's length - a Pacific lagoon system where mothers and calves approach the pangas, watched from Puerto San Carlos and Lopez Mateos.

Every winter, gray whales complete one of the longest migrations of any mammal - from Arctic feeding grounds to the warm, shallow lagoons of Baja California Sur - to calve and mate. Magdalena Bay, a long system of mangrove channels and barrier-island lagoons on the Pacific side, is one of the three main nurseries, and from January into March its pangas take visitors out to meet them. The extraordinary part is behavioural: in these lagoons some whales approach boats deliberately, mothers nudging calves alongside to be touched, a phenomenon documented since the 1970s and unexplained in any satisfying way. Regulations govern everything - licensed boats, permits, limited numbers, engines idled, no chasing, contact only if the whale initiates. Puerto San Carlos and Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos are the working ports, small and plain, with cooperatives running trips and simple hotels and seafood kitchens for those staying over. Between whale seasons the bay is a birding and fishing destination and almost entirely quiet.
What you actually see
- The mothers and calves - approaching pangas in the lagoon.
- The friendly encounters - whales initiating contact at the boat.
- The mangrove channels - herons, ospreys and dunes beyond.
- The port towns - working fishing communities in season.
When to go
January to March, with February usually the peak; mornings are calmest. Book with permitted cooperatives - unlicensed boats exist and are worth avoiding on every count.
Honest expectations
Encounters vary by day and are never guaranteed. Touching happens only if a whale offers - never reach for one. The ports are basic and the drive from La Paz is long; day trips are exhausting but doable.
Nearby
Ciudad Constitucion's farm country lies inland; Loreto and La Paz bracket the peninsula either side.
