Whale Sharks of La Paz

Each winter, juvenile whale sharks gather in the shallow, plankton-rich water off El Mogote, the sandbar that closes La Paz bay - young animals typically four to eight metres long, feeding at the surface within a short boat ride of the city. The encounter is managed tightly and has become a model of its kind: boats must hold permits, carry a certified guide, stay within a marked protection zone, limit numbers in the water, keep prescribed distances, and swim rather than dive, with no touching and no flash. Sessions are short and rotated so that no animal is crowded. In the water the experience is straightforward and astonishing - a spotted flank sliding past at walking pace while the guide positions swimmers ahead and to the side, repeated over an hour or so. Sightings are strong in season but never promised, and authorities close the area outright when animal numbers or conditions require. Operators who cut corners exist; choosing one that recites the rules before departure is both the ethical and the better choice.

Honest expectations

No touching, no diving down, no flash - and no guarantees. Water can be cold and murky with plankton, which is precisely why the sharks are there. Trips cancel for wind or closure without much notice.
