Metsamor

Metsamor was occupied from around the fifth millennium BC and became a substantial fortified settlement in the Bronze Age, with smelting furnaces that worked copper, tin, and by some readings iron earlier than most of the region. A group of carved rock platforms on the site has been interpreted as an astronomical observatory, though as with Carahunge the claim is debated rather than settled. The museum beside the excavation holds the metalwork, pottery and burial finds.

What to look for

• The citadel mound - excavated walls and building foundations of the fortified settlement.
• The smelting furnaces - the Bronze Age metallurgy complex.
• The rock platforms - carved surfaces read by some as an observatory.
• The museum - metalwork, pottery and grave goods from the excavations.

When to go

April to June and September to November are comfortable; the plain is severely hot in midsummer. The museum keeps limited hours and closes on some weekdays. Ararat is clearest in spring and autumn.

Practical notes

The excavated remains are low walls and foundations rather than standing structures. The observatory interpretation is contested and presented on site as more certain than it is. Signage is limited and mostly in Armenian.

Nearby

Echmiadzin is east towards Yerevan, and the Armavir plain runs west.
